It’s not everyday a young kiwi kid from Onehunga gets embraced by an internationally renowned crew on the cusp of all things Hip Hop. The story of Smokeygotbeatz is one of an understated, shy, hardworking kid who happened to have an early emersion into NZ’s up and coming Hip Hop scene. This provided the catalyst and inspiration to deep dive into the world of production. After a few years of honing his craft, a fateful and defining twitter interaction with Jay Rock saw some of Smokeys beats make their way into the hands of the TDE crew and eventually appear on Jay’s Parental Advisory album.
From there, Smokey’s relationship with the US Hip Hop scene has flourished – providing beats for everyone from Kendrick to Audio Push, Isaiah Rashad, Ganxsta Ridd, King Lil G, MC Eiht, Blaison Maven and Hit-Boy. With the release of his own crew SWIDT’s (See What I Did There) first full length album and the endorsement of Hip Hop legends from all walks, Smokey is already well on his way to establishing himself as a big part of NZ’s ever evolving Hip Hop scene.
Keep an eye out for big things from this small part of Auckland city.
